I have several gmail accounts in Tbird. Starting today, one has become very slow and eventually craps out when saving a sent message. I have deleted the account and re-added it back several times. It seems to work for the first message I send and then it goes back to the spinning circle whenever I access the email. If I send a message to the account, it takes a looong time to show up. If I send a message from the account, it goes out quick, but acts like it isn't and then eventually errors out.

I have no idea where to go from here. I have been working on this for hours. Any help would be appreciated. thanks, Bruce

Chosen solution

turn off the option in account setting to save a copy of sent email. Gmail does it as well and there is then a conflict as both try and add the outgoing mail. IT almost always results in duplication or other errors.

Also with gmail account. in account settings > server settings select the advanced button and enter [Gmail] in the IMAP server directory field.

This will reset some of your folders and remove the sub folder [gmail] in the folder pane. A restart of Thunderbird is often required here.to gt the folder pane to update. Not that a gmail server can have 15 connections, so you might want to tweak that setting as well to improve performance. but 15 is probably going to cause issues with your phone connecting or other devices. They all need a connection or two.

Update: I once again deleted the account and added it back as a POP account and it works great that way. But, I want it back as an IMAP account. Could it be the profile files are messed up?

Well, on a whim today (day after problem started), I deleted the pop account and re-added it as an IMAP account. Seems like everything is back to normal now. I don't know why it was only affecting the one Gmail account and why it started and ended, but I am glad it is fixed. It was my primary email account.

I just wanted to post this in case someone else had the same/similar issue. I guess the solution is to simple wait it out.

OK, seems that didn't solve the problem. After sending one or two messages, the problem returned. But, I went into the account profile and deleted all the *.msf files and then restarted Tbird and that seems to have worked. I guess one of the .msf files were corrupted and deleting them causes Tbird to rebuild them. Seems to be working, fingers crossed.

Matt: So far so good. I did both suggestions, but took out the second one where you say to "in account settings > server settings select the advanced button and enter [Gmail] in the IMAP server directory field." That jacked up my folders in TBird bad. But even with removing that fix, things seem to be working good now with just the fix to turn off saving a copy in the sent mail folder. If things go back to crap, I will repost, but so far so good.

As of now, I have not marked this as solved since I have made changes before with intial success but soon the problem returned. If this is still working good by tomorrow, I will go back and mark it SOLVED as well. thanks Matt and everyone else that has posted advice on this issue. Bruce

It seems that changing the setting "turn off the option in account setting to save a copy of sent email" was the solution for me. It is still working fine today. I will consider this problem solved and I want to once again thank Matt and everyone else that provided help and suggestions.
