The message could not be sent because ..outgoing server timed out, but the message arrived

I get "The message could not be sent because the connection to outgoing server (SMPT) relay.plus.net timed out. Try again. " on large (8Mb) emails. However the upload continues, and when it finishes the email arrives at the recipient. However the message does not appear in my sent folder, just as if sending had failed.

What is going on?

As an alternative take a look at the File Link feature. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/filelink-large-attachments

It works well in connection with Dropbox. You'd need to install this add-on for Dropbox. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/dropbox-for-filelink
