Windows 10 was installed first, Mint 18 installed second. Both installs are version 52 of thunderbird. I've read in the forums that Lightning has some OS specific stuff so I presume it explains why its disable when I'm in Mint. Is there some creative workaround whereby I have a unified profile folder but somehow can run lightning on both OS's?

you can have two profiles and manually modify the local path in account settings to move mail to a common location. That will require you to use some form of cal dav sync to synchronize your calendars.

Be warned though that manually specifying the location of mail directories make migration and moving to a new device something of a nightmare as UNIX and Windows use different methods of describing a path and a MOUNT POINT. I suggest you use a local NAS device and place the mail on it. THen migration will at least leave you with a common starting point of that device when it comes time to manually update the userprefs.js file some time in the future.
