Firefox will let me surf the web but certain sites such as facebook and eBay take too long to respond and i can not login, how can i fix this?

I can still look up support on the internet but anything that would require a log on to work will not load and FF will give me this error message. This has happened for a few weeks now on and off. Now it has been 3 days of no log ons whatsoever. PLEASE HELP ME I have homework and eBay auctions ending!
