Having had a major computer crash which took all my data and emails with it, all the information has been recovered and I have been using Thunderbird to read my old emails. But having, I now find mistakenly, set Thunderbird to IMAP to act as my email client, because my ISP email addresses only have mailboxes of 1GB, the mailboxes rapidly get full so I need to delete emails which I don't want to do. Also, because my internet is fairly slow but adequate for me at about 6MB/sec, as all the "synchronisation" which I don't need involves uploading to the ISP mailboxes it takes time. Worse, any attempt to copy in old emails takes a great deal of time due to the aforementioned synchronisation thus it's uploading to the ISP mailboxes. I have several times uninstalled Thunderbird (having carefully saved all my emails) and reinstalled it but it defaults to all the old settings including as email client for my email addresses with IMAP settings. So please, how do I reinstall Thunderbird with POP3 settings? And no, I don't need synchronisation across all my devices, I need to keep all my emails old and new in one place on my computer, and then make backup copies elsewhere. My phone picks up emails when I'm out and about, I don't need all my emails on there. And please don't suggest I try gmail, it doesn't like my mobile number for some reason and refuses to use it for “verification”, asking for another mobile number (I don't have one and I'm not going to get one!) I'd be most grateful for some help. Thanks Dawn

Start TB and then File/Offline/Work Offline to go offline. Remove the IMAP account if you wish from Tools/Account Settings, Account Actions. Then, add your account from File/New/Existing Mail Account (press Alt if the Menu Bar with File is hidden). Enter your credentials and then click Manual config. In the setup window, choose POP or IMAP and enter the server settings recommended by your provider. Click Advanced config. to enter extra details if necessary. Click Done, then go online by unchecking File/Offline/Work Offline.

Thanks so, so much. I spent most of the day trying to sort this out but not being very technical did not understand any instructions I looked at, and there did not seem to be any instructions as to how to stop it reinstalling with the accounts attached on IMAP. I haven't quite got the accounts to work yet with my ISP server, outgoing is fine but incoming won't work yet, but I'm sure one or more of the settings isn't right so that should be easily solved by a phonecall to my ISP. And in the meantime I can use the webmail. Thanks again, most grateful!

Who is the mail provider?

Oh it's fine, it's Utility Warehouse (a UK company), but I've been on the webmail and got all the correct settings now so it all works fine. Thanks for your help!
