I want to update my firefox on Ubuntu 12.04. Tried downloading more than once. It gets to the point where the files are extracted, but gives me no options to "run" or "install." Am I supposed to highlight one of those extracted files and run it, in order that I can install the new firefox? I'm on version 52 right now.

I tried using your suggestions of going to terminal and typing in cd ~ extracting the contents of the downloaded file (but there are many files) using tar xjf firefox-*.tar.bz2 being sure firefox was closed and starting Firefox, running the firefox script using ~/firefox/firefox I'm not sure about that last step...I don't know what it means to run the script in the firefox folder. I don't know what the firefox folder is, but if firefox is already closed, how do I run it in the firefox folder.

I need step by step instructions...very detailed. I did all of the above steps in terminal. Perhaps that was incorrect.

Hi

I use Ubuntu myself with a version of Firefox from Mozilla (as opposed to the Gnome Software store) and I understand what you mean.

  1. Download the .tar.bz2 file from here.
  2. Save it in your home folder and extract it using right click and the options to extract.
  3. In the Firefox folder, double-click on the firefox-bin file.

Firefox should now run.

it is the firefox script file and not the firefox-bin.

In the Firefox folder in terminal you can type ./firefox to use it.

You can also create desktop and or panel launcher shortcuts to the firefox sh file in Firefox folder.

There is no installer or make or rpm or deb or such.
