Is there a way to recover a firefox sync from a backup?
I reinstalledy my win7 box recently. There' a windows.old directory with the original installation. Is there a way to get the sync key out of the .old directory? I don't know where the personalization stuff is stored but presumably there's a file or something I can copy out into my new installation so that my sync can continue to work without me wiping everything?
Lesson learned, save the recovery key somewhere you remember!
Solution choisie
If you have a backup of the Firefox Profile Folder then you can copy the key3.db and signons.sqlite file to a Firefox profile folder.
Then you can check if you can find the sync key in the Password Manager.
Make a backup of the current he key3.db and signons.sqlite files if you already have saved passwords or create a new profile and copy the files to that profile folder to inspect those files.

The "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K and the "AppData" folder in Vista/Windows 7 are hidden folders.
You can find the sync password and the sync key in the password manager on the computer where you originally created that sync account (email). Look for:
- chrome://weave (Mozilla Services Password)
- chrome://weave (Mozilla Services Encryption Passphrase)

Thanks, I found the files with some effort and replaced them but that didn't bring them back unfortunately. Thanks for the help but I'll rebuild.
The answer is still good though. Hopefully, this'll help someone else with a similar problem.

You did make sure that you have both files from the same profile and that sync has been used in that Firefox profile in that backup?
There should also be some sync related prefs in the prefs.js file in that case.
