Private browsing mode has been a feature of Firefox for many years now. This support article should help you with it:

Do you mean the extra PB icon on the Windows Taskbar ? You can set browser.privateWindowSeparation.enabled = false on the about:config page to disable this feature.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. On the warning page, you can click "Accept the Risk and Continue" to open about:config.

Thank you for your replies.

My question is why Firefox Private Browsing was indicated as "recently added" to my computer. I didn't add it and I use Firefox very infrequently.

This icon has been added through a recent update of Firefox.
