I have been using Thunderbird for years, although I do admit I can be somewhat techy challenged. I recently had to change a password on Outlook email account. I thought "easy peasy" just change the password, none of the other settings needed to be changed. Well not so fast! Thunderbird is not receiving or sending anything and continually get the pop up message to about the password.

So my next step: I looked at the settings on the "ON SERVER SETTINGS" server name: IMAP-mail.outlook.com Port 993 Security SSL/TLS Password: normal server name: SMTP-mail.outlook.com Port 587 Security STARTTLS Password: normal I entered the password and still rejected.

I went on the blog trying to figure out (please note above message "techy challenged"). I found one of the blogs says to go to OPTIONS/PRIVACY & SECURITY Here is says: server name is imap://outlook.office365.com AND

                                               smtp://smtp-mail.outlook.com

the imap has the correct new password; smtp has ALMOST the correct password: one digit is the upper case when it should be a lower case as the correct new password.

I am head scratching! I would appreciate assistance from the community! Thank you

Remove the passwords from Saved Passwords, change the incoming server to outlook.office365.com and the outgoing to smtp.office365.com, keep the ports and security the same, restart TB and enter the correct, verified password when prompted.

Thank you, I will give that a try!!

I finally had an opportunity to do what was suggested. I changed the incoming and outgoing server. The pop up window for setting up my existing email address allowed me to enter the new password. I got a big yellow box stating, "unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, user name or password." I am confident with my password. the user name is my email. I am still head scratching. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? Thank you!

Does this account have two-step verification? Are you connecting through a VPN?

more options

I do have a 2 step verification, which is new. I did not have that before. I do not know what a VPN is.

I did create a APP password and tried that. I got the same statement. Should I create a new APP password?

more options

Sure, but first remove the entries in Saved Passwords, restart TB, enter the app password.
