Why is Firefox still freezing up and refusing to close?

Nobody has yet answered my previous questions on this subject.

Firefox is still freezing up and refusing to either minimize nor close except with the Windows Task Manager. This happens especially if I open a tab containing a video such as on CNN, Yahoo, etc., even though I do not normally actually play or watch that video.

I have completely uninstalled Firefox 3 times, done registry sweeps with two different programs plus a manual sweep, and then reinstalled, all with the same end results. The last time I removed Firefox I also removed the Mozilla file (Extensions, Firefox, Plugins, etc) from My Documents folder, and spent several hours rebuilding. I am now SOMETIMES able to close the browser by closing all other tabs and then returning to my home page, but whenever I open a smaller window (such as print, help, etc.) EVERYTHING freezes up.

Would somebody please explain what is going on?

Many thanks,

Paige

I think that I have finally found both the problem and the solution.

Several weeks ago, out of both boredom and curiosity, I downloaded and installed RealPlayer. It was not what I expected nor wanted, so I uninstalled and swept the registry with two different registry clean programs, yet it still was showing up in "phantom" form on Firefox Plugins.

Today I went into regedit, started a search, and manually deleted at LEAST 200-250 registry keys referring to RealPlayer, RealAudio, RealJukebox, RealVideo, RealMedia, and RealSystem.

So far, Firefox now appears to be operating normally in all respects.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, as it appears there is definitely a conflict with the current versions of Firefox and RealPlayer (which is a lousy and extremely slow program anyway!).

I have the same problem. It's the realplayer plugin that freezes firefox. when running and you visit a page with video (or just flash maybe) it will freeze and you can't close firefox.

Through trial and error it seems to be the "Real Player Browser Record Plugin 14.0.1" found in Extensions in the Tools-Addons Window. When that plugin is disabled, Firefox seems to act much more well-behaved. The four Plugins from Realplayer (Real Jukebox, Real Player, Real G2 and Real Html) seem to be ok. I messed around with turning off and on plugins and extensions and so far w/ the Real Player Record Extension disabled, I've had a firefox browser open for 2 days w/ no freeze-ups. This all started with Firefox 3.6.13 update.
