I should start by saying I use thunderbird on two different computers (home and work) and generally leave it open on both all of the time that they are on. This may be related to the problem but is something I think calendar should be able to handle. I checked that the calendar is not in "read only" mode on either computers which was suggested for a similar problem for other people. Reminders for events will pop up and nothing happens when I press "dismiss". I can "x" out of the reminder window, but it pops up again shortly. I also seem to be having a lot of error messages about syncing issues which makes me suspect it has something to do with thunderbird being on two different computers at the same time.

How is the calendar shared between the two? Google Calendar? Some other networked calendar? A homebrew solution?

And you're using Provider For Google Calendar?

I'm using Lightening, but perhaps I could use Provider instead?

Lightning is the calendar component of Thunderbird. To use it with Google Calendar you have two choices:

  • Provider For Google Calendar, which is an addon that permits a calendar in Lightning to synchronise with Google Calendar using Google's own protocol.
  • CalDAV, which is built into Lightning and is supported by Google Calendar, but not widely publicised. You need to look up the URL of your calendar and enter that into Lightning.

Of the two, Provider is much the easiest to set up. Both methods require you to jump through the various loops that represent Google's "enhanced security". I use OAuth2 and two factor authentication, the latter involving them sending me a six-digit code via sms for me to enter into a login prompt.
