I downloaded version 3.6 a while ago ( i have had a persona theme since) but when I went to install an add-on it says I am running 3.0.15, I need to upgrade to 3.6. I reinstalled .6 multiple times, cleared my cache, temp files, etc. (which I do nearly every day) but still when I go to help and properties it still shows I am using 3.0.15.

What do I do?

This happened

Every time Firefox opened

== Just realized it

Something you downloaded or installed has altered your User Agent. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_Agent

The User Agent shown in your question is: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.15) Gecko/2009101601 Firefox/3.0.15 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) ~~red:FBSMTWB~~ (highlight added)

~~blue:Step A~~ Verify that Fun Web Products is not installed on your system by following the instructions in Step 1 - Step 3. Step 1. You can check if you have any of these from "Fun Web Products" installed: Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs: Ask.com Bar,My Search Bar,MyWay Speed Bar,My Web Search Bar,Fun Web Products Easy Installer See: http://www.safer-networking.com/removemywebsearch.php PC Hell: My Web Search Removal Instructions http://helpint.mywebsearch.com/intlinfo/help/toolhelp.jhtml#q3 Step 2. You may need to change a preference to reset your default URL/location bar search provider: -Enter about:config in the address/URL bar and press the Enter key -If you see a warning, accept it (Promise that you will be careful) -Filter = keyword.url -Below the Filter, right-click on keyword.URL and choose "Reset" -Restart Firefox (File > Restart Firefox) See: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keyword.url Step 3. You may need to reset your homepage. Firefox can open multiple home pages. Home pages are separated by the "|" symbol. See: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/How+to+set+the+home+page

~~blue:Step B~~ Reset your User Agent. Reset general user-agent -In Firefox, type about:config in the URL bar and press the Enter key. -If you see the warning, accept it (promise to be careful). -Filter = general.useragent.extra.firefox -Right-click that preference and select Reset -Then restart Firefox (File > Restart Firefox)

There are no Fun Web Products Installed (I went through the nightmare of removing them from a friends computer).

I went to about:config, which I remember going to before, but when I right-clicked the 'reset' was shaded and would not let me click on any of the items.

What shows up when you do this: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Finding+your+Firefox+version

Also what is on the last 2 or 3 lines on that display?

Also try: Reset general user-agent -In Firefox, type about:config in the URL bar and press the Enter key. -If you see the warning, accept it (promise to be careful). -Filter = general.useragent -Right-click on any preference in bold and select Reset -Then restart Firefox (File > Restart Firefox)

Ok, weird! Looking where you said, just under 'Firefox' it says 3.6.8 (which I feel dumb because I did not see that, I was going off of the bottom few lines).

The bottom lines say:

"Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.15) Gecko/2009101601 Firefox/3.0.15 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) FBSMTWB

When I tried installing the add-on it said I had version 3.0.15, which it what it looks like above. But under 'Firefox' - version says 3.6.8. I shouldn't be prompted to upgrade if I do have 3.6.8.

I am attaching a screen shot.

Thanks,

Tim

We are now back to your User Agent having been changed and the "FBSMTWB" indicates that some Fun Web Product is or has been installed on your system.

Did you follow the instructions that I gave in my original answer to search for any of the items under Step A? It is important to look because these items sometime piggy-back on free programs downloaded from the internet. Most have an opt-out for the "extras", but you must be vigilant when downloading and installing any free product from the internet. Even some free security software come bundled with toolbars and/or search engines, which is a real shame.

Did you look at the other "general.useragent" items as I asked in my second reply?

Your user agent shows that you have (or had) the Fast Browser Search toolbar (FBSMTWB) installed.

See these pages and threads about Fast Browser Search (FBSMTWB: Fast Browser Search Make The Web Better). http://www.fastbrowsersearch.com/FBS_Toolbar/Help/helpUninstalling.aspx http://www.pccybertek.com/2009/05/remove-fast-browser-search

You need to reset the pref general.useragent.override on the about:config page.

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the Enter key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website. If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.

Sorry, I had to go out of state for a couple of weeks f0r a funeral.

I do remember My Fun Web Products installing a while back but as soon as I noticed it I deleted it. None of them are installed.

I went to about:config, he keyword.url and general.useragent.extra.firefox but when I right clicked on both of the the "reset" was shaded and it would not let me choose it. I did reset my home page to the default.

Do I need to log on as an administrator. I have never seen that on FireFox, but I am no expert.

Thanks,

Tim
