It is similar to compacting folders. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/compacting-folders
While compacting happens locally on your computer, expunge is done on the server. https://websitetutorials.grafix.gr/home-2/web-hosting/thunderbird-imap-expunge-or-how-to-really-delete-emails-from-the-server/

whats compacting? never heard of that before.
when messages are deleted from a file, such as inbox, the space it used is still there. Compacting reduces the size of the file by eliminating those spaces.

When someone posts a link in response to a support question, you can click the link to get more information. Thought you've heard that before.
