I am new to firefox, and not a developer. I have seen articles showing how to install a Language module (done, GB English), but when I right click in a text box all the advice says I should see a "Dictionary" sub menu, but I don't. Spellchecker works in Chrome and Safari, just not firefox. Any ideas...

You need to install a Dictionary and not a Language Pack. The language packs are a way to change between languages of the UI like the menus as such.

The dictionaries are listed at https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/language-tools/
