In order to use my preferred browser, MetaGer, I have to change the default search engine every time I open Firefox. After setting the default search engine, Firefox reverts to Google after relaunch. How do I fix this? I'm using Firefox 85 with OS 10.13.6 High Sierra. Thanks

Chosen solution

You're right! i run an app called cookie that automatically deletes cookies and cache whenever I close a browser. I disabled automatic removal and voila —my browser of choice was retained!

Thanks so much for your and everyone else's time and patience in helping me!

Is the problem with MetaGer or Firefox?

Firefox reverts to Google after relaunch

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; (<Control> [Mac=<Command>] <Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Remove “ Google “ Anything.

Also remove SafeSearch, SearchAssist Incognito, FileConverter Addon, SearchLock, DiscreteSearch, WebSearch, Findwide Search Engine, securedsearch

Now do the same in the computer’s Programs Folder.

Windows: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the Applications folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

The problem is with Firefox. It does the same thing with DuckDuck Go. I even removed google from the Search Shortcuts list, but the same result.

I never had any Google extensions, or SafeSearch, SearchAssist Incognito, FileConverter Add on, SearchLock, DiscreteSearch, WebSearch, Findwide Search Engine, or secured search.

The only extensions that I have are: 1Password, Metager, ExpressVPN, and uBlock Origin

I'm not sure what you meant by the computer's Programs Folder. I opened and inspected the contents of the FF application, but saw nothing Google related.

What else can I try, other than having to uninstall/reinstall FF?

Thanks

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files . C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

Uninstalled and reinstalled FF, but the problem still remains. Suggestions?

Are any other settings changing in your Firefox when you quit it -- I mean if you do not log in to your Firefox Account.

more options

Whenever I open FIrefox, Google always appears as the default browser, whether I log in or not. I also remove Google, Amazon, Bing, and EBay from the “Search Shortcuts “ list of alternative search engines, and they also reappear after I close and re-open FFox

So all your custom search engine settings get lost, but everything else is retained?

This could indicate that a file named search.json.mozlz4 in your profile folder either is not updating to reflect your changes or is getting reverted after you exit Firefox.

Could you open your profile folder in Finder and see whether changes to search engine visibility (check/uncheck or remove) or change to your default search engine cause the timestamp on the file to update? This article has tips on how to open your profile folder:

Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data

more options

All of my other custom settings are retained. It's only the default search engine settings that are not retained. Changing the search engine visibility (remove) or changing the default search engine does cause the timestamp on the file search.json.mozlz4 to update.

more options

Hmm, I don't know why the changes in the file are not retained. Does the Metager extension have any settings to make itself the default that might be getting turned off?

more options

I did not see anything in the Metager extension that would cause that to happen. In any case it seems to be a moot point, since the same thing happens when I make Duck Duck Go the default.

I seems to me to be a fault with the FFox browser. After opening the troubleshooting pane, I noticed that the extension "google@search.mozilla.org" was enabled as "true". I then opened about:Config and changed the setting to "false", however after quiting and relaunching FF, Google was once agin the default search engine, and the extension reverted to "true'!

more options

The default search engine information is not stored in about:config, so I still think there must be some problem with search.json.mozlz4. But I don't know what's going on.

more options

To reset the search engines, remove these files in the Firefox profile folder; search.json + search-metadata.json + search.sqlite + search.json.mozlz4

search.json.mozlz4 ==only== (v45+)

New files are created when needed.

You may have ad/mal-ware. Further information can be found in this article; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware?cache=no

Run most or all of the listed free to use malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

more options

I removed all of the files that you listed. Malwarebytes reports no malware. Google remains as the default search engine. This is so frustrating!

more options

If you go to the internal About Policies page at about:policies does it list any active policies?

Some of the search-related policies are only applicable to the Extended Support Release of Firefox, which wouldn't apply to Firefox 85, but oddly your Firefox identified itself as Firefox 78. But that could be because of the privacy.resistFingerprinting feature.

more options

There were no active policies listed. there was only a notice that "The Enterprise Policies service is inactive." I verified that I'm running FF85.0.1

more options

Hi, this really does sound like there's a third-party app that's changing your default engine and then Firefox is blocking it and resetting your default to Google.

Please can you try this:

  • Type about:config in the address bar, and acknowledge the warning.
  • Search for 'browser.search.log' (without the quotes).
  • Double click it to set its value to true.
  • Use Firefox as you normally do.
  • Next time you restart it, before you actually start it, take a copy of search.json.mozlz4
  • Start Firefox and see if the default engine has reverted again.
  • If it has, then go to Tools -> Web Developer -> Browser Console (not web console).
  • Right click and select all.
  • Do Cmd-C to copy everything
  • Paste it here.

Keep the copy of the search.json.moz.lz4, we might need to see or look in the data for that as well.

That doesn't surprise me, so far I think there's a third party in play, but we could do with those logs to try and determine what's happening.
