I can drag and drop files into attachment easily when I'm not in Administrator mode. But I need to be in Administrator mode at work and therefore for some reason I cannot drag and drop files into attachments; I'm forced to manually search and select particular files for attaching, which significantly slows my day-to-day work. Is it a bug? I have the up-to-date version of Thunderbird and I use MS Windows 7 Ultimate. Any help would be highly appreciated. Thx

Can you explain 'drag and drop files into attachment' in more detail? What exactly are you doing?

when writing a new e-mail, I want to add a file to it (e.g. a photo, a MS Word document...), normally you can select the file on your PC and drag it to upper right corner of the e-mail to attach the file to that e-mail but when I use Thunderbird in Administrator mode (which I need to) I cannot drag and drop the file, I can only manually select a file using "Attach" command

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

Dear Matt I already tried disabling addons before, but it didn't solve my problem. Running my operating system in Safe Mode with Networking fixed the issue, so I was able to drag and drop normally when in this mode. So now the task is to find out which software is to blame. I tried disabling an antivirus program, firewall etc. but with no effect. Any more ideas what can cause the issue? Thx.

Got some sort of security or password protection from your bank?

type msconfig at the start menu search box and press enter. Select the startup tab and work through that list. Starting with anything security related, like spam tools the bank stuff I mentioned earlier and anything that catches your eye.

I have junk from Yahoo, Google, Dell, Skype, adobe, Video and Magic disk disabled from my last round of cleanups.

Things from AMD (Advanced Micro devices) and Intel usually relate to your motherboard and should be left to run.

The side benefit of disabling most of this junk is your machine boot up faster and uses less memory and sometimes runs significantly faster. That talk about windows computers getting slower and slower is often caused by startup programs that do not need to be there running and slowing things down.

Hi Matt Thanks for your suggestions. I tried disabling all programs (one by one) from the startup tab list but with no help; I still can't use drag and drop option.

I still have a feeling that the Administrator mode itself is the reason. I tried the same on 5 different PCs with various operating systems (Windows 7, Vista or even XP) with same results.

Can you pls confirm to me that YOU can use drag and drop option normally on your Thunderbird while being in Administrator mode, please?

Thanks ain advance!

My normal account is an administrator account, but I am not using the account named administrator. Is that crossed wires on my part perhaps?

Hi Matt

Maybe I haven't described the issue correctly. There is a difference between "Administrator account" and "Administrator mode". The thing is I need to use Thunderbird in Administrator mode (right-clicking the Thunderbird icon and selecting "Run as Administrator").

Meanwhile I managed to solve the issue by modifying User Account Control option, namely by decreasing the level to "Never notify". From now on, I can use drag and drop option while being in Administrator mode.

Anyway, thanks for your help and suggestions.
