I need to reverse the refreshing of firefox because the directions for getting my passwords and preferences back are too complicated for me to follow.

I refreshed Firefox to speed up the browser as directed. NONE of my bookmarks, preferences, or saved passwords were transferred. Firefox should not say these things will be "imported" if they are not going to be where they are needed. I have seen some long and complicated directions for fixing this problem but I don't understand them at all.

How can I reverse the refresh process? Right now, I'm feeling like the "refresh button" was just a quick and easy way to ruin the whole browser experience.

I appreciate any help for a person who basically feels comfortable finding a file on the desktop and is lost beyond that.

jscher2000,

I appreciate that response, but that is just more than I am comfortable attempting. However, a full two days after I "refreshed" Firefox and restarted my computer, all the passwords and bookmarks reappeared. I wish I could duplicate the experience from start to finish for someone who does understand it all, because it sounds like some sort of glitch or missed step in the process. However, I'm in good shape now and will probably never, ever refresh Firefox again.

Hi Troody, I probably wrote some of those long directions.

The Refresh procedure, if it runs correctly, does carry over that data from your old profile to your new profile, and I'm sorry to hear it didn't work correctly in your case.

Do you have an Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop? If so, if you click inside, can you find your recent Firefox data (semi-randomly named profile folder)? One way to check is to click into the bookmarkbackups folder and look at the dates in the file names. If you have something from this week, that's probably your most recent data.

Restoring bookmarks is the simplest. In Firefox, you can call up the Restore menu, click "Choose File" and then point Firefox up to your Desktop, into Old Firefox Data, into your old data to the bookmarkbackups folder.

The other data is more difficult and you need to be comfortable copying files from place to place to do that.

Thank you for your quick response and that information on bookmarks. I'll give it a try. However, the far more pressing problem is the loss of my passwords.

Regarding passwords, there are two files that you would need to copy from the Old Firefox Data folder into your "live" profile folder (while Firefox is closed). The files are described in the following article, and I'm also linking to an article about how to most easily open your current profile folder.

It is possible that Firefox updated to ver 57.0.1 and a issue in Profiles was fixed which is a good thing.

Oh, never be afraid of such things, They really are step by step and help is here, before get in trouble ;=}
