I clicked on a tab to update Firefox, and now my start page is different, there is a pop-up from the left side of the screen, and there is an extra header at the top of my screen with search bars and tabs I did not install.

You probably have adware or malware on your computer. Conduit in your plugins is something many may consider unwanted.

Uninstall what you can from the Windows control panel. Consider scanning for malware. Unfortunately some adware is considered by some scanning tools to be ok because you will have knowingly installed it and some users may find some of the adware etc. beneficial.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.
