when starting firefox I get page with an index of all files and folders in my home folder, including all hidden files.

You can check the command line in the desktop shortcut to see if there is a trailing '.' appended.

thank you for steering me in the right direction while I did not have a trailing "." I did have something in the line that was causing the problem I use a command to play a sound file when opening my apps I had firefox %u $HOME play /home/user/sound/blah when I remove the $HOME but leave the play command and path it works fine

I kept thinking something was wrong with the firefox install thank you again
