Is Java Runtime necessary for the FF browser to operate properly?

I'm not having any particular problems with Java on my system. I would like to get rid of it for security reasons, but I don't want to affect my FF browser if it needs Java Runtime to work correctly. I just would like to know if removing Java will adversely effect the browser in any way.

No. You do not need the JRE plugin installed. You can disable that plugin via Tools > Add-ons > Plugins or uninstall Java if you're sure that you won't visit websites that need it.
