when i click on the firefox icon, the hourglass timer appears but nothing happens. Also, when I tried to uninstall firefos it said the programme is running, but it's not?

You should take a look at the Knowledge Base article Firefox won't start - find solutions. There is a lot of good information in there.
As for the message that Firefox is running, you should right click in the task bar (next to the time and date) and open the Task Manager. You can kill the running process from this menu. That will ensure Firefox isn't running in the background.
