Does the XML Parsing error message stop appearing when you start Firefox ??

OR Firefox is not loading any websites ??

Your post seems to have been cut short and I don't know if what would have followed is useful but ...

Have you tried opening Firefox in safe mode?

It seems there may be corrupt configuration information in the domainlookup extension from qualitynonsense which you are using.

Ah, I see you were editing while I was answering ;-)

It is difficult to see whether which code you are quoting as there seems to be an end of "div" tag after your name at the bottom which makes me wonder if the "divid" tag further up your post should be there or not.

Anyway, there is definitely a problem with that code. If nothing else there seems to be a ">" missing from somewhere and also a missing double quote but I couldn't say where they should be.

Try disabling that add-on to see whether your problem goes away.

the text in red (code, I think) as you can tell I am not that knowledgeable . reads

&netOffline.longDesc;

^

please suggest solutions as if I was a complete idiot ,i'm not but it's the only way I can be sure of understanding you. I haven't tried anything as of yet. For some reason ,oh thats better , I was going to say that for some reason the 'code' part does not seem to come out after I post it,but when I looked at the reply again it was showing correctly

Okay. Going back to the beginning ...

It looks as if you have a problem with an add-ons called "Domain Lookup" so I would suggest the first thing you do is disable that add-on to see if your problem goes away.

Using the menus go to the add-ons manager (Tools > Add-ons)

In the list on the left hand side select "Extensions"

Look for "Domain Lookup" and click the "Disable" button to the right of it. You may have to remove the add-on but for the time being just disable it.

Restart Firefox. Can you now go online? If not check that the extension is really disabled.

If that solves the problem and the problem started after an upgrade to Firefox you might want to check if the version of the extension you were using is the latest (it may be a compatibility issue. Check the latest version number on at <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/domain-lookup/">https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/domain-lookup/</a> and see if it matched the one in add-ons manager. If it is different updating it might let you use it again without problems.

Things look so obvious with hind sight , after your replies, the error message is beginning to make more sense. I found Library/SupportFirefox/ bla bla extensions etc., Dragged the offending extension (which by the way had been installed by me 18 months ago) to trash tried to find anything related to the extension left behind, couldn't . Switched off completely ,rebooted, and............................. still couldn't get online with Firefox

more options

Unfortunately, using Finder to delete the extension may cause other problems because there could be configuration options pointing to it which now won't be able to find the files.

Try starting Firefox in safe mode (the link in mha007's post takes you to an explanation which includes how to do that) so that all extensions are disabled and see if the problem is resolved.

komakai thank you so much for your help ,we all got to learn and I was a late developer, hense it seems to trip me up more than most . I just tried again and was directed to the fact that Firefox was in offline mode----- fixed that and hey presto I'm back online . I know its daft and so much of that error message was obvious to the enlightened, and clear to me now, thankfully , to start with I just ouldn't understand what had caused the problem , no Knowledge gives you paranoia . Well I have learnt something useful today , thank you for taking the time to hold my hand through the situation, Still can't understand why this problem lay dormant for 18 months but at least it is gone , thanks again Nick Abbott

Glad you got it sorted out.

It may not have been a dormant problem. It may be incompatibility after an update of versions or it could even be that something else took you off line and Domain Lookup (which clearly could only work if you are online) didn't know what to do.

Understand , or I think so , I'd forgotten that i'd even installed domain lookup and don't really know if i'll miss it. What may have brought all this to the fore was as already mentioned I was trying to install Tor project (paranoia strikes again) and whilst I had success in that it downloaded as hoped , I got caught up on configuration issues. Once installed you get 7 options (is that the right description?) 1 General 2 Network 3 Sharing 4 Services 5 Appearance 6 Advanced 7 Help

as anyone who is familiar with Tor Vidalia ,Project will know ,on each and every of the available clicks , you get a lot of choices . Is anyone out there prepared to walk me through the options? I would really love to configure it properly, and understand each step of the way. I am unveiling my query here as Firefox/Vidalia is the browser to use Tor. I think you can guess what I need --- Start with General and 1. what do I ? first question is Start Tor software when Vidalia starts (clicking on browse) it prompts select a path to Tor and offers a choice :- Folder (folder picture)GPG Mail1.2.0. Folder (image of folder) MacOS

what do I choose? I KNOW I'M DIM BUT I'M TRYING !

2. Proxy Application (optional) click browse and you get :- polipo tor

I don't know which to click, but i'd love to

3. Proxy Applications Arguments what do I do here?

I would like to know about proxies: what one would be good for me ? which would work with Tor/Vidalia Firefox/Mozilla Mac OSX10.5.8 Gmail

am I still being too dense? there are another 6 check settings to go through !

O.K. can some patient soul work me through this cofiguration please please let me know
