The Firefox 5.0.1 update is a special version for Mac OSX versions of Firefox, to fix problems brought about by Apple's recent update for Mac OSX, and isn't being offered an an update for Windows or Linux operating system versions of Firefox. (Same for the 3.6.19 update.)

Firefox 5.0.1 is only available for Windows & Linux as a full installation, no fixes other than the new version number, so the version number is the same for all Operating Systems.

Well I didn't know that and so I went to the mozilla site and, on my XP machine, downloaded and installed 5.0.1. Now firefox is the worst browser ever. Freezes. Crashes. Doesn't display complete websites. A disaster. How do I go back to 5.0??? Only 5.0.1 seems to be available for windows (or mac or linux for that matter).
