firefox will not remember my hotmail user id and doesn't offer a box to do so it works in IE

Very frustrating. FF started acting up a couple of days ago. It began by showing my user id in hotmail. The next time I checked mail, (I had not shut down the computer) it was blank. I filled it in and then my password. When I shut off the computer and tried the next day. It asked if I wanted to remember my log in name. I said, Yes. After that, FF never remembered my user name and never provided a box to do so. I had not changed anything in FF since downloading 5.o several weeks ago. It works fine in IE. I cannot find any answer anywhere that offers a fix. I even uninstalled 5.o and reinstalled. It still doesn't work.

As the original poster of the problem, I'm underwelmed by the "support" from Firefox.

As a followup, The same thing has happened with with Win 7.

Come on, guys, (gals) if the d*mn thing worked before FF 5.0, you must have some idea what was changed that causes this program.

I don't know if I can help but I have firefox and IE 8 and hotmail doesn't remember my username on either browser or computer. Seems to have occured about 2 weeks ago. I tried allowing cookies, changing security settings, etc. with no luck. my oS is XP and on laptop is windows 7.

i just wanted to let you know I am having problems with this also. I will bookmark this page and add to it if I have any luck. Please let me know if you find a solution.

I also noticed that hotmail used to have 2 check boxes, one to remember username and one to remember the password.

Now on IE and firefox, there is no checkbox for remembering username/e-mail address. Only one stating "remember me" which only applies for both.

This applies on my laptop windows 7 and desktop XP. maybe this is a hotmail change?

Looks like it is a hotmail problem. At least for the problem I am having.

-> Tap ALT key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar

-> go to Help Menu -> select "Restart with Add-ons Disabled"

Firefox will close then it will open up with just basic Firefox. Now do this:

-> Update Firefox to the latest version by going to Help Menu -> About Firefox -> click Check for Updates -> if an updated version is found then download the latest version and install it. After that follow these steps:

-> Update ALL your Firefox Plug-ins https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/

-> go to View Menu -> Toolbars -> unselect All Unwanted toolbars

-> go to Tools Menu -> Options -> Privacy section -> History section -> Firefox will: select "Use custom settings for history" -> Remove Checkmark from "Permanent Private Browsing mode" -> place Checkmarks on:

1) Remember my Browsing History
2) Remember Download History
3) Remember Search History
4) Accept Cookies from sites -> select "Exceptions..." button -> Click "Remove All Sites" at the bottom of "Exception - Cookies" Window
4a) Accept Third-party Cookies -> under "Keep Until" select "They Expire"

-> REMOVE Checkmark from CLEAR HISTORY WHEN FIREFOX CLOSES

-> go to Tools Menu -> Options -> Security -> place Checkmarks on:

1) Remember Passwords for sites

2) Warn me when sites try to install add-ons

3) Block reported attack sites

4) Block reported web forgeries

-> Click OK on Options window

Now Login to Hotmail by typing User ID and Password, place Checkmark on "Keep me signed in" and Sign-In to Hotmail. When you are done with Hotmail don't LogOut, just close the browser window. When you restart Firefox and go to Hotmail again, you will not need to Login again.. Hotmail will start with your User ID already logged in.

Check and tell if its working.

millzie has the best answer, however, the problem doesn't seem to exist if you use IE. IE is still so far behind in catching FF, that it isn't really a good option. I guess I'll stick it out with FF for now and retype everything. Leave it to Microsoft to fix something that ain't broke...
