HP Laptop running XP SP3 with FF4 default browser. ZoneAlarm firewall, but problem still occurs when this turned off. Gmail will not accept my username and/or password in FF but immediate access when switching to IE8.

Chosen solution

Problems logging in to GMail, try

  • double-click on user id, to bring up choices, password should then fill in automatically.
  • if no place to fill in password, use the link to say another user-id then try again
  • Try logging in from a Google search, if successful click on GMail at top, if link is not available you probably have been into GMail yet with current profile.
  • Try logging in as a different user, and fill in the same user-id as you wanted in the first place.

If those fail, try removing specific cookies for Google or Google mail

  1. Tools > Options > Privacy
  2. Show Cookies
  3. filter on: mail.google
  4. delete individual cookies for gmail, use the down-arrow and "Del" keys

If that fails try removing all Google cookies

  1. as above, but filter on: google
  2. use Ctrl+A to select all
  3. review list, modify selection with Ctrl key, then use "Del" key

I find I have a lot less trouble bringing up GMail with a keyword shortcut

Some GMail tips

Resolution was removal of a Google cookie. (Thanks for specific feedback along with solved indication)

Many thanks - it was one of the google cookies that blocked access to gmail.
