I have cut-and-pasted this problem from another that already exists, because the original complainer and myself have not gotten any kind of feedback for several weeks. Here is the original link: https://support.mozilla.com/ta-LK/questions/820841#answer-182812 -- please help us to resolve this problem, because, apparently, a lot of other Firefox users have it also, and I'm sure they would be glad to figure out what needs to be done to finally make the 4.01 upgrade take effect.

Did you ever install a Firefox 4 beta or release candidate version?

See:

Remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.
You may need to delete active-update.xml and updates.xml as well if present.

XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
(%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)

Vista:

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
(%LOCALAPPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)

If you have problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

  • Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
  • Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
  • It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

I did examine your instructions and look for the directories that you indicated, but it got very frustrating, because apparently, some of those directories are 'hidden,' and although I know how to deal with that kind of situation (un-hiding directories), I just felt like attempting to do an install over my existing installation, because I suspect that Mozilla is fairly aware of how to code the install to deal with an existing installation. I must admit, I felt a bit worried about doing this, but, it seems to have worked out! So far. For the first time, when I use Help --> About Firefox, I am seeing the glorious 4.0.1 designation. Hooray! I am very enthused about this, and am hopeful that I will no longer receive fruitless update bulletins. I really appreciate your technical help. Thank you very much, cor-el, for pointing the way to the fresh install for 4.0.1, which, for some reason, I just wasn't able to find on my own...
