When I manually enter a URL address in the window, then press the enter key, nothing happens. Zip. Nada. This began with a 4.0 installation, persisted after a downgrade back to 3.6, through a complete removal (including all local-user files and a registry cleanup and so on) and a subsequent 4.0.1 installation.

This can be caused by an add-on that is not working properly. The procedure in the following link can be used to identify what one is causing your problem - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes

The AVG Safe Search add-on has caused this problem for some people.

Nope. That level of superficial difficulty I had already checked in several ways. Notice the line inn my original message:

"... through a complete removal (including all local-user files and a registry cleanup and so on) and a subsequent 4.0.1 installation."

I did a very thorough removal, including all add-ons and local-user data. Effectively a new-user installation, as far as I could make it so. The problem still occurred.

The problem does not occur in Chrome, Opera or IE. It did not occur in Firefox until after an installation of 4.0 (which was taken down and replaced with 3.6 as a result of persistent plugin problems).
