Unable to install Firefox 3.6.15 "libsmime3.dylib" in use

My problem is basically identical to the one posted for Firefox 3.6.16, except that I'm having the problem with the currently available version 3.6.15, on the Mac. The system says that libsmime3.dylib is in use, yet nothing else is running, and I cannot locate the libsmime3.dylib file anywhere on my system; the trash has been emptied, my system rebooted. My former version of Firefox has also been trashed, and since I am unable to install the new version, I am now running Opera.

I had this problem too and fixed it with these instructions: http://siliconchaos.blogspot.com/2010/08/installing-firefox-4-beta-2-error-on.html

Basically just run the following command in the terminal: sudo killall vpnagentd

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

I was able to reinstall a previous version, only after deleting the Firefox application (which version was there, I no longer knew after 3.6.15's failed install) and rebooting to make sure libsmime3.dylib could be emptied from the trash. I did not wish to attempt reinstalling 3.6.15, but now with this tip I'll give it a second chance
