I have tried repeatedly to put search engines into tool bar but they will not go in. The search box says "manage search engines" and it takes you to the Firefox add-on page, but it never worked. I found Google somewhere on another bar, but it was not where it was supposed to be. I noticed some time ago, a few updates back, I was experiencing problems with Firefox. I became afraid to do the updates for fear of something going wrong!! I also updated XP with Windows 7. It looked as though the 7 and updates were not working together!!??

addendum: When I open the "manage search engines, there is supposed to be some engines installed; but there never was any engines in there. So I would hit "get more engines" which took me to add-ons. It said "add to Firefox" but then nothing would happen. I don't know where they went, but they did not go into the engine toolbar!!??

Someone else may well answer, meanwhile if you do not already have firefox help as a search engine click on the down arrow on the left of the search bar.
(try whilst you are on this firefox help page)

  • does that have two options
  1. manage search engines
  2. Add Firefox Help
    • does it work if you click add firefox help, is that added to your list ?
    • now when you click on the down arrow is firefox help listed ?
    • next try can you remove firefox help from the options now available ?

Try to delete search.sqlite and search.json in the Firefox Profile Folder
