I have just installed Firefox and am trying to import my favourites from IE9 but every time Firefox crashes and says the programme will have to be closed

Try exporting from IE and then importing into Firefox.

In IE:
File > Import/Export - Export to HTML file

then in Firefox:
Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks -> Import & Backup - Import HTML... = From HTML file
