Is there anyway to close a tab I originally opened on mobile using the desktop browser? I don't see an option anywhere in about:sync-tabs or in the synced tabs side bar.

No, Sync doesn't do "remote" actions like that. It saves and syncs data about which tabs are open or were open on other devices.
