RealPlayer installs a number of add-ons in Firefox, which sometimes cause download problems or other issues with audio or video content on websites. This article explains how to fix or work around these problems.

Note: This article only applies to Windows.

Flash videos or games on sites like Facebook or YouTube may appear, black, white or grey and never play

A recent version of Flash doesn't work with RealPlayer. See, Flash 11.3 doesn't load video in Firefox for more information.

Tip and Alternative Solution

At present Flash Player 11.3 may itself not work in Windows Vista and above if it is protected mode and RealPlayer may also encounter problems if protected mode is enabled. A solution is to downgrade to an earlier FlashPlayer version, (or to manually turn off protected mode).

Downgrading to an earlier version Flash Player 10.3 or 11.2

This may need you to first use an Adobe uninstall utility. The process is fully explained with suitable links in the article Flash 11.3 Crashes

A simple method of working out whether protected mode is in use is.

  1. Start a new session of Firefox, preferably with only the home page or a blak tab open
  2. Open Windows Task Manager Ctrl + Shift + Esc and use the process tab
  3. There should be no process plugincontainer running
  4. Open and play a single Flash Player Video
  5. If you have
    • one plugincontainer process running protected mode is off
    • two plugincontainer processes running indicate protected mode is in use.

The RealPlayer plugin has crashed

If you see this error, it means that the RealPlayer plugin was not able to handle embedded audio or video content on a webpage. This is a known problem. As a workaround, disable the "RealPlayer G2 LiveConnect-Enabled Plug-In" in the Add-ons Manager Plugins list. See Troubleshoot issues with plugins like Flash or Java to fix common Firefox problems for details. You will still be able to use the RealPlayer program for links to Real Media files but audio and video content embedded in webpages will not play.
