No matter what i do, the search engines in the toolbar defaults back to Yahoo! Removing all but Google does not help. When you restart Firefox Yahoo is the default. Likewise the new tabs and homepage revert to Yahoo after reopening. This is a new HP laptop with Windows 10 and I just downloaded Firefox. I have spent a long time trying to fix this and about to give up and switch browsers. I bet Chrome will let me use Google.

Usually settings changes are retained between restarts. If you change other preferences such as your home page, does Firefox manage to retain those between restarts?

We have a general support article on issues that can cause changes to be lost between sessions: How to fix preferences that won't save.

Two other thoughts:

(1) Some utility/security/privacy software modifies Firefox's settings folder between sessions. This includes Advanced SystemCare, and various programs' "home page protection" or "browsing protection" feature. If you have any software with a similar feature, disable it until everything is set as you want and stable.

(2) You might check for any extensions that could possibly be modifying settings when you start Firefox. You can do that on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. On a new install, it's usually blank, unless Firefox detected extensions that already existed on your system. Anything unexpected?

Oh, I just noticed you mentioned your home page changing. But what do you mean about the new tab changing? By default, Firefox displays sites from your history, as pictured in these articles:

Thanks. There was an extension for something called Quick Search in my add ons. When I started my new PC there was a toolbar at the top of my Windows 10 screen that was called Quick Search. I deleted it using the Control Panel. Little did I know it also added a Add on to Firefox. Removing it seems to solve the problem. BTW, I meant Home page rather than Tabs.
