Hello I just got a new computer and want to transfer the bookmarks from my old computer to my new computer. I saw someplace in the forum that if you backup the old bookmarks and restore them on the new computer, it would wipe out any bookmark on my new computer if I backup using HTML. I would prefer not to use sync.

Thank you for your time in advance - Kelbelle3201

If you do use Sync and opt to use the bookmark syncing I personally would still ensure I had manual backups of bookmarks because Sync occasionally messes up bookmarks.

The HTML bookmarks do not wipe your existing bookmarks.

HTML export import These add to your bookmarks collection.

(JSON) backup restore These overwrite the exiting bookmarks collection.

Both methods have their uses. If you have new computer with only a handful of new bookmarks, and an old computer with lots of bookmarks, maybe in folders and with tags. Then what I would suggest (in this order) is:

  1. Backup old computers bookmarks with the standard Firefox backup (JSON) type
  2. Export new computers bookmarks.
  3. Restore new computers bookmarks using backup from old computer.
  4. Import new computers bookmarks to add them to the collection
