Hello all,

We recently changed our email server but its URL remained the same.

Emails where not migrated to the new server so there is nothing on it.

I had my email account set up as IMAP in thunderbird and want to keep it as an archive of old emails.

So i don't synchronize it any more

I tried making a new account with the same email and same server URL so that I can download new emails and all hell broke loose.

Thunderbird deleted the old account and when I figured that out I deleted the new account and gradually the old email came back.

What would be the correct procedure to have both accounts?

If the new server had a different URL but the email username remained the same would there still be a problem?

Thanks in advance!

We don't normally say "URL" in connection with email servers. So I guess you mean its human-readable address e.g. mail.example.com?

I would have saved all the old messages in Local Folders. then I would be free to remove and re-create the account as and when the old server was withdrawn and the new one became available.

Trying not to synchronize is a bit like riding a bike with no brakes and planning on not having to stop. You don't know what will happen.
