You can check for problems with preferences.

Delete possible user.js and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

Windows hides some file extensions by default. Among them are .html and .ini and .js and .txt, so you may only see file name without file extension. You can see the real file type (file extension) in the properties of the file via the right-click context menu in Windows Explorer.

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

Been there before with other problems and it has never sorted them. Why doesn't the system simply work?? I'm not a computer expert!!

Can you clarify what happens?

Does that setting in "Options/Preferences -> Privacy -> Location Bar" change when you restart Firefox?

There is software like Advanced SystemCare with its Surfing Protection feature that can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

I have Advanced System Care but I have now disabled the Surfing Protection area of the software. No change. I set the Location Bar setting to nothing. All is well until Firefox/compueter is shut down and restarted then we are back to square one...suggestions from History and Bookmarks. Frustrating..for the life of me, I cannot see why the default is set this way anyway! All I want is a simple life where I do what I want without prompts...is that too much to ask???

I STILL have this problem!! I have searched my Profile for a prefjs entry...nothing. Pref yes, a Java file. What now?? I set the Awesome bar to nothing and each time on restart it defaults back to History etc There MUST be a way out, surely! I have also turned off all the relevant bits of my Advanced System Care....
