If Firefox still crashes, please type about:crashes into the address bar, press Enter, and copy and paste the last 5 ID's (they start with BP-)

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one. Windows 8 has antivirus built-in already.

That sounds very suspicious to me, like some malware is trying to defend itself against getting cleaned out. You may need to use a different computer to download cleanup tools and burn them to a CD or put them on a USB flash drive to transfer them to your infected computer. You also can try the specialized forums in the article Fred linked to (Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware). The posters there can walk you through using advanced tools that require personal assistance.
