Hello folks,

I'll start by saying that i'm not the most tech savvy - but can do bits and pieces. Love Mozilla - but am having nothing but trouble of late after an update. Really at my wits end!

Mozilla updated itself to what i thought was the new 36 version, although going through the many troubleshooting processes again today, i stumbled across an option to update firefox - it stated i was running an old version. I used to get the odd flash/shockwave crash - but it always righted itself by me downloading a new one. (it has never shown as being out of date)

I am apparently running Windows 8, Firefox 36, plug ins - Open H264 (no clue what/where this came from), Shockwave Flash 16.0.0.305, Silverlight, iTunes app detector and some photo gallery thing- all up to date.

I have run through most of the troubleshooting ideas in the forums. I'm now submitting crash reports every few minutes. I really cannot list them all! So i have the ones for my session today... Some of your crash reports weren’t sent to the Mozilla Servers.

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers, click it and select Submit.

Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.

The crash report flagged these programs;

Process Type plugin Shockwave Flash Version:16.0.0.305

ntdll.dll = Microsoft

If you have problems with current Shockwave Flash plugin versions then check this:

  • see if there are updates for your graphics drive drivers

https://support.mozilla.org/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration

  • disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)

https://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround

  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

Hi - thanks for the reply.

I used this to illustrate just how many crashes i have had in such a small window of time.

I have tried all of the above mentioned and nothing helps.

The thread says Windows 7 - it is in fact Windows 8 and its only since Firefox updated itself that i've had this problem.

I have tried to do as instructed regarding the latest string of crash reports - some of which i haven't been warned of, without BP numbers. When i click on the report, it changes screens and is trying to view an archived report (warning states it will take between 26seconds and 5 minutes) then it times out to continually try again.

All 4 Crash Reports that did go thru show Flash as the cause of those crashes.

See this - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/adobe-flash-plugin-has-crashed - for possible solutions you can try. Note, there are two places to disable Hardware Acceleration, the most likely cause (IMO). In Firefox = Options > Advanced -> General - Browsing - Use hardware acceleration when available . And in Flash, as explained here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/adobe-flash-plugin-has-crashed#w_disable-hardware-acceleration-in-flash

As far as the delays of up to 5 minutes when attempting to view a Crash Report, that is normal. It happens as the Flash Reports display server is looking for each specific report ID from all the receiving servers around the globe. Once a particular Crash Report has been viewed, anyone else who wants to view that same report will usually see it within 15 seconds or so. Your 4 crash reports came up very fast for me, maybe because you viewed them first and they were already "moved" to a more local server. Personally, I let the query cycle once - when it refreshes to continue looking I just close the tab. Many days I open over 100 crash reports, and I don't have the patience to sit and wait more than 30 seconds for multiple reports to open - 30 seconds is when the query refreshes to start looking further. This situation has gotten abominable since the beginning of December; what with all the Flash updates (5 in a little over 2 months) and all the "Flash-caused" crashes overloading the crash reporting system and this forum.

As far as the vast majority of your crash reports not even getting submitted to the receiving servers, Mozilla very purposely "throttles" the receiving servers so as to not become overwhelmed with repetitive reports and to cause their servers to crash. In your particular case, Mozilla is probably refusing "receipt" of most of those crash reports from the same device in such a repetitive frequency.

Just submit the BP crash numbers. The reports have several pages of information we need to look at.

Hi, thanks for the replies again

I have tried to report several times - nothing works! Not for today's reports or for the reports of any other day.

I have also done the hardware accelerator thing - on and off- doesn't work.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled x4 - works for a minute or so - then back we go to not working. I have been over to Adobe forums as suggested - i;m afaid i dont know enough about IT to start doing most of the things suggested and to be honest i shouldn't really have to.

I must really like Firefox to keep trying to fix whatever it is.

That are problems with the Shockwave Flash plugin.

You can check for problems with current Shockwave Flash plugin versions and try this:

I should also point out that Firefox is slow and stalls. Some pages are magnified and others open in normal view.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You may have zoomed web page(s) by accident. Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.

  • View > Zoom > Reset (Ctrl/Command+0 (zero))

Sorry, still nada. No reply from the Adobe forums either - though plenty of questions re the same issue.

Think it is time to switch browsers. :(

Thanks anyway

Did you try disabling Adobe's protected mode ?

That has been mentioned previously but I did not notice you say you had tried it. There is now a new easier method of of doing that.

  • Original method see https://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround
  • New method Adobe Flash plugin has crashed - Prevent it from happening again_disable-flash-protected-mode
1 In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter.
    * The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise! to continue to the about:config page.
2 Search for dom.ipc.plugins.flash.disable-protected-mode in the list of preferences.
3 Double-click on the preference to toggle its value from false to true. (If the setting is already true it means that Flash Protected Mode is currently disabled.)
    4 Close Firefox.
Click the menu button then click Exit
    5 Restart Firefox.

After trying everything on your list, Flash is crashing worse than before. I don't know if the crash report for this query got through - even that crashed as I hit submit. I just tried Internet Explorer, and it crashed too.

Hi Bob,

If IE is also crashing that could indicate a deeper problem with your computer.

Note not only is IE a completely different Browser it does not even use the same FlashPlayer plugin software.

You may do better asking advice on some General Windows forum or support site. Examples (obviously there are other alternatives)

You may like to mention this thread if you ask for help elsewhere, it may save you repeating information.

If you do find an answer elsewhere please post back to let us know.
