Unnecessary request for master password on startup, I am not using sync

When firefox starts up I am asked for the master password. I would prefer to be only asked when needed. I am not sure when this behaviour changed, and as far as I know I am not using sync.

When I look at tools/options/sync there is a CreateAccount/Login prompt so I take that to mean that I am not using sync.

I am using 54.0.1 (32-bit) on Windows 10

Maybe FireFTP or another extension needs the master password.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

As stated, the problem still occurs in safe mode, which as I understand it, eliminates addons or extensions as being the cause of the problem. It *could* be one of my home pages, but none of them are "logged on" in any way.

Is there a way to start firefox without the home pages, other than deleteing them?

In Options > General change the When Firefox starts: to Show a blank page.

Doing that won't change your Home Page/s setting and the Home button will still take you to your Homepages/s

Thanks. Turned out to be one of my home pages (I'm embarrassed to say).

I copied the list of home pages to a word doc (to save them) and then eliminated them one at a time. When I found the offending one - which DID contain a possible login, but I was NOT selecting to logon) I then went to the remembered passwords and removed the one for that page, even though I believed it was not being used.

It now functions as I want, the master password is NOT asked for, nor am I asked to logon to that page anyhow.

Seems strange, but all fixed now.

Thanks all for your help - and SO quick too!

Cheers, Les
