Since the last few updates of firefox there are sites that I cannot access, that look like code or just text but nothing clickable. I am now using IE most of the time and have just downloaded Chrome. I would prefer Firefox if you can get it working again. Bev Sullivan

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

I did what you said. Now I can't log in "at all"!

Did you check your extensions?

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History > Show All History" or "View > Sidebar > History") or via the about:permissions page.

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache, history, and exceptions, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of the involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.

I ask Mozilla. Does it seem reasonable that updates should make a program worse? That an upgrade would actually be a downgrade? Please ask the programmers to be more selective in what they choose to change. It seems that they make changes just for the sake of change an not really any improvement at all. On the contrary....they make things worse. This is a problem with everyone who uses Foxfire. It's all over the ancestry forums - and people are moving away from Foxfire. Such a shame.

hi bsullivan54, have you set firefox to never remember a history in the privacy section of the options? if so, then what you're seeing is probably the new tracking protection feature in private browsing in action. however, since this totally optional, you can easily turn it off in the privacy section of the options panel: Turn off Tracking Protection

I think the problem is being totally misunderstood. Here's a example. If I go to Ancestry.com with IE I can view the site, click on links - it looks normal. If I go to Ancestry.com with Firefox, the page appears to be crashed. I get a scrambled mess, can't click on anything and it there are no graphics, everything is disheveled and looks more like a website in progress than a finished page. It's NOT a privacy issue...it's NOT a tracking issue. It's an issue with how the page is being displayed.

Can you attach a screenshot?

  • Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot
  • Make sure that you do not exceed the maximum size of 1 MB

Did you try to access the website in Firefox Safe Mode?

I did all that - it had been suggested before. Since none of the problems existed with the old versions of Firefox, it is obvious that it is something wrong with Firefox and the new version. This is too much bother to go through since I can just stop using firefox and go with IE or Chrome. Thanks anyway for your efforts. I think that it would be a good idea for you to let the programmers know that they are making a big mess out of what used to be a great program.

You can install an older (working) version of Firefox and wait until an update comes out that fixes the problem. However it is not "recommended."
