Trying to add https://search.yahoo.com/search?p=%s&fr=opensearch

results in an error message:

Could not add OpenSearch Provider for https://search.yahoo.com/search?p=%s&fr=opensearch.

So what am I doing wrong.

Probably using Yahoo instruction. They have a long history of writing poor to plain incorrect instructions.

Goto Thunderbird's settings. Search on Search. Change the drop down entry as shown in the image.

I agree attempting to add https://search.yahoo.com/ fails. Please file a bug report https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=Thunderbird
