How can I stop Thunderbird opening a new window whenever I click on an e-mail?

This program has been driving me mad for some time now and is only one of a number of problems. When I click on a new e-mail I do not want it to open in a new window but simply to open in the area below, so I can scroll through it.

When I want to drag an e-mail to another folder I do not want that folder to open as I then have to find the In box again to open it.

If I want to amend a word in an e-mail I am composing, it often highlights either the whole word or even the whole document and subsequent tries often go to the calendar which I never use.

None of these problems were present previously and I have fiddled with various setting to no avail and it takes up a lot of time just to carry out basic tasks.

Any advice would be very welcome

Thanks Ray Vincent

Then try a different mouse. All the actions you describe happen with a double click. If they are happening when you single click your mouse is broken or you need to adjust your double click speed.
