Web site says v8.0.1 available, but my v8.0.0 update check says Firefox is up to date

I see from the Mozilla web site that Firefox v8.0.1 is available to the release channel, however, when I check for updates with v8.0.0 Firefox says that it is up to date. I have tried this with both my user and administrator accounts.

I have also tried the "solution" described in the MozillaZine Knowledge Base (delete the files in the %LOCALAPPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates folder). This has worked in the past, but isn't working this time around.

The automatic updating has been unreliable for ages. Is this being investigated? Is there a once and for all solution?

Chosen solution

As a Windows user,

  • you do not need the update, unless you have crashing issues caused by an old version of Roboform (there are many solved answers to questions about that problem in this forum).
  • Firefox 8.0.1 addresses no security issues; it only addresses crash issues in 2 cases.
  • Posted above: Only the Mac users will get the idle/manual update from 8.0 to 8.0.1 patch.
    • That means only Mac users will get updates through Help > About Firefox > Check for updates
  • For the time being, the only way for users other than Mac to update, is to download the complete installer and install over the top of Firefox 8.0.
  • Please re-read the information that I posted.

Firefox 8.0.1 has the following changes:

  • Fixed Mac OS X crash that occurred in certain instances when a Java Applet is loaded with Java SE 6 version 1.6.0_29 installed.
  • Fixed Windows startup crash caused by RoboForm versions older than 7.6.2.
  • Source (Release Notes > What's New in Firefox): https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/8.0.1/releasenotes/

Comments from the contributors forum:

  • ...not really needed for Linux users.
  • Windows users who do not have crash upon startup or use a older version of Roboform do not really need it either.
  • All users using Fx 4.0 to 7.0.1 will get 8.0.1 if they check for updates.
  • Only the Mac users will get the idle/manual update from 8.0 to 8.0.1 patch.
  • Also, when later updating from Firefox 8.0 (Firefox 8.0.1 not installed) to Firefox 9.0, when it is released, MAY require the download of the full installer for Firefox 9.

You can download the full installer for Firefox 8.0.1, SAVE to your hard drive, close Firefox and install over the top of Firefox 8.0

  • Download Firefox 8.0.1 full installer (choose your OS and interface language -->

Thanks SafeBrowser, but your answer doesn't really deal with the problem of the automatic updater being so unreliable.

I've used the full installation file in the past to get around this, but this doesn't fix the problem, and as a result this can mean that Firefox (and Thunderbird, as it has the same problem) can easily go out of date if I don't manually check the Mozilla web site.

The problem has been reported in Bugzilla, but nothing seems to be happening. Is this an acknowledged problem? If not, how do I get it noticed given the existing Bugzilla report seems to be going nowhere?

Okay, thanks SafeBrowser.

As feedback for you, if you put the most important information at the beginning, people are more likely to see it. Putting the most significant information at bullet point 7, after a whole lot of information that is irrelevant to my problem, just makes no sense.

Bullet points 2 and 5 applied to you more so than bullet point 7. Did you bother to read those?

  • All of the information was posted in the order copied from other sources.
  • I did not take the time to re-arrange them for your convenience or anyone elses.
  • I was attempting to post as much information as possible for anyone else reading this thread regardless of their OS.

Also, all of my postings contain no extraneous information; everything is meant to be read. Skipping anything in a post from a volunteer attempting to assist you is a mistake on your part.

I updated roboform to 7.6.4. I also updated firefox to 8.0.1. Nothing doing. Still doesn't work.

Blocking something as popular as roboform without a solution is the height of stupidity. Chrome, here I come!

jrockoford:

Roboform was causing the crashing, not Firefox. That is the reason that Roboform has had several version updates in the last couple of months. Would you rather have Firefox crashing at start-up for seemingly no reason?

Have you verified that Roboform 7.6.4 got installed correctly?

  • others who updated Roboform, have reported no problems
  • one Firefox user found that he had to un-install the prior Roboform version from Firefox Add-ons > Extensions before installing the new version

What version of Roboform shows in Firefox (Add-ons > Extensions)? Did your re-start Firefox after installing Roboform? Have you tried re-booting your system?
