Firefox 6 crashes every time I try to start it, safemode aswell. 5 worked perfectly but now I can't download 5 again
Firefox automatically downloaded and installed version 6 without my authorisation and now it has stopped working. I can't get it to run in safemode either. I have tried a total uninstall and reinstall but I get the same problem. Every time I select it a small crash window appears instead of the browser that asks me to report the crash. Now I can't find a link to re download version 5.

You may be infected with malware.
- Bug 670542 – Crash in nsStandardURL::SchemeIs or nsSimpleURI::SchemeIs mainly close to startup, mainly with a random .cpl or .dll filename in stack (malware-related)
(your crash id didn't link to an existing crash report, so I can't check if you have this issue)
Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

I regularly scan for such things and I have nothing. I have since found a download of Firefox 5 and reinstalled it with the auto updates turned off. It works just as well as it always has.
I have the same issue. Firefox 6 works fine for other accounts on my PC, but always crashes in startup with mine. I use McAfee, Spybot S&D & Malwarebytes Antimalware - all kept up-to-date & scans run on a regular basis. I have uninstalled, deleted the <profile>\Application Data\Mozilla folder and reinstalled - doesn't solve the issue. Would love to have FF 5 back again - can't find a link for it.
it crashes consistently within 5 seconds after I open it. It started after updating to rev 6 (now 6.02); I have a desktop and a laptop windows 7 with similar problems; my third laptop with windows xp and firefox 6 is running fine. (I am sending this using Chrome which I will use until firefox fixes the problem
Here is a link for all the older versions of FireFox: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/

Thank you for the link - back on Firefox 5 & it's working again.
I've had the same problem. Here is what I tried. Updated Firefox from 3.XX to 6.X and it crashed right when I started it up. Sent crash info to Firefox. Tried reinstalling and still crashed. Tried starting in safe mode and checking all boxes and still crashed. Tried starting in safe mode and still crashed. Tried uninstalling and installing and still crashed. Tried uninstalling and rebooting, deleting program files mozilla/firefox folder and installing, still crashed. Tried safe mode again and still crashed. Uninstalled and deleted folder, reinstalled 5.0.1 via link from above and it worked.
Something is wrong with version 6.X Please let me know when it's fixed.
Running Windows XP SP3 with 2 gigs of ram, 100+ gigs free on harddrive. Each time it crashed sent info to Firefox with email address.
Downloading Firefox 5.0.1 from the old firefoxes link in the post from RogerHuston (thanks Roger!) above, and installing directly over the top of Firefox 6 (without uninstalling) worked for me.
Here's the link directly to Firefox 5.0.1:
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/
Keep in mind that 5.0.1 is old and behind on security updates, more so now that Fx 7.0 is now out.

As the thread host I would just like to point out that this is not a thread about how to get Firefox 5 but how to fix Firefox 6.
Bug 670542 is fixed in Firefox 7.
Nevertheless, your malware undetectable by most anti-malware programs (because randomly named) is still present and has other hidden symptoms.
If this malware is a rookit, try this free Kapersky's tool.
Same problem on my a mac system... no anti-malware installed, so i wonder what my problem is. Would be great to have my FF 5 back, anyone has the download link to FF 5 for mac?

Were you able to submit any crash reports?
If you have submitted Breakpad crash reports then post the IDs of one or more Breakpad crash reports (bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx).
You can find the IDs of the submitted crash reports on the about:crashes page.
You can open the about:crashes page via the location bar, like you open a website.

Possible causes on Mac include problems with fonts, so you can check that out with Font Book.
