If Firefox 5.0 works fine, then just keep it, and save yourself some aggravation. newer doesn't always mean better.

Just a heads up. I had this problem and found out it was a trojan named Sefnit or some variant of it that had sneaked its way onto my system. It apparently targets firefox and tries to intercept urls and redirect some of them to other sites. This malware works with firefox 5 but some change in firefox 6 causes it to crash. After removing this trojan from the registry firefox 6 started working.

I had this issue. I went to c:\program files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\

I renamed my plugins folder to plugins.old.

It recreated the Plugins folder and all was good again. I have since reinstalled the plugins I've been prompted to install.

Just had a run-in with Sefnit on Windows 7 64-bit running Firefox 6.0.2, which kept crashing as described. Couldn't clear tabs or anything, figured I had borked the restore session process somehow. So, I installed Firefox 7 and forgot about the issue.

Came in to work this morning, Microsoft Security Essentials popped up with Win32.Sefnit.O found in some usbnetmm.dll file buried in my local user profile. I'm running a full scan now, but I'm still not entirely sure how I caught this.
