I have Firefox 40.0.3 installed on Windows 10 x64 Sony Vaio laptop.

Just 40 - 60 minutes after I start firefox and leave it opened it starts to hang and freeze like every minute. It hangs for about 10 seconds becoming unresponsive and then turns back normal for about 1 minute. That happens every minute and only get worse until I restart Firefox. Then the problem goes away for another 40 - 60 minutes after which it starts hanging again.

What I've tried so far:

- Deleted all browsing history / cache - Resetted Firefox - Disabled hardware acceleration - Removed all add-ons - Searched for solution all over the Internet

Nothing has helped. It happens for months now and I'm getting really stressed out because I need to restart each time while doing important tasks.

I can mention that I haven't tried to delete plugins as I don't know how to do that. Here's a screenshot of the plugins:

Also my PC has a shared graphics card and 4 GB of RAM.

Cheers

Issues have been previously linked to the McAfee Site Advisor extension. Try to disable it and see if the problem persists.

http://service.mcafee.com/faqdocument.aspx?id=TS100162 How to uninstall SiteAdvisor

To disable it: Type "about:addons" in the Location bar Find the extension and click on its "Disable" button

Type about:support in the address bar and press Enter. Under the main banner, press the button; Copy Text To Clipboard.. Then in the reply box at the bottom of this page, do a right click in the box and select Paste. This will show us your system details. No Personal Information Is Collected.

The thing is that McAfee has been removed from my system long time ago. And I didn't notice there was its leftover left in Firefox.

Now I can't get rid of this so called "plugin".

What I've done so far:

- Deleted all McAfee folders from my PC - Installed McAfee Security Scanner Plus and uninstalled it

The leftover still remains in Firefox.

How can I get rid of it?

Type about:plugins<enter> in the address bar. Now search for the plug-in.

Example; Adobe Acrobat File: nppdf32.dll,nppdf32.dll Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\browser\nppdf32.dll,C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\AIR\nppdf32.dll Version: 11.0.9.29 State: Enabled Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 11.0.9

This will show you the path to that program. Copy the Path Only. Also note the name of the file, and remember it. Now Close Firefox. Open your file browser and paste the path in the address bar. Find the file, and delete it. Now you can restart Firefox. Warning ! Remember to delete the right program.

To be safe, remove all of them. Then install the current.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that has effect.

Already tried all of the above and it didn't help.

I did as you told and here's what I've come up with:

File: npMcAfeeMSS.dll Percorso: C:\Program Files\Sony\MSS\3.8.141\npMcAfeeMSS.dll Versione: 3.8.141.0 Stato: attivo McAfee MSS+ NPAPI Plugin

It turns out that the "plugin" was a part of the McAfee Scanner Plus package that came along with a Sony Vaio purchase.

Not sure why it should have been in conflict with Firefox.

When I opened this directory C:\Program Files\Sony\MSS\ there was uninstallation file there while McAfee Scanner Plus wasn't even listed in Programs and Features. I just ran uninstaller and the "plugin" has gone.

Now I'm not sure if the problem has been fixed and Firefox won't be hanging again. Let me test it for a couple of hours.
