The Firefox window is greyed out. When using Task Manager to close it, TM says that Firefox is waiting for a response from us, but we never saw any window or message from the program asking for an action.

New info. My husband just installed the older version of Firefox, and it is also not responding. Again without ever seeing a request for a response from him.
