On my laptop, when I double click a message the Inbox window is replaced by a new wndow that shows the content of the message. On my other computer, when I double click a message the inbox screen remains and a new window opens with the selected message. I want both computers to show the selected message in a separate window, but I can't find a way to change the way the laptop is displaying it. The same version of Thunderbird is running on both computers.

Double click opens the message in a new window or tab depending on your settings. Both cover the main window. Pressing F8 turns on the Message Pane. Maybe that is what you are looking for.
