My Firefox automatically upgraded to 49. None of my saved logins were available, and when I tried to set a master password by selecting the checkbox (and entering a new password in both fields of the popup because a master password is not set), I got an error message of "cannot change master password"

Creating a new empty profile also had the same error when trying to set a master password.

The Browser Console showed: Component returned failure code: 0x805a1f9b [nsIPK11Token.initPassword] from crypto-SDR.js NS_ERROR_XPC_JAVASCRIPT_ERROR_WITH_DETAILS: [JavaScript Error: "Initialization failed" {file: "resource://gre/components/storage-json.js" line: 90}]'[JavaScript Error: "Initialization failed" {file: "resource://gre/components/storage-json.js" line: 90}]' when calling method: [nsILoginManagerStorage::initialize]

The reason I tried to set the master password to try to reproduce the problem is: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:G6HYHr2zixoJ:forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php%3Ff%3D9%26t%3D2864819+&cd=4&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:L0nJLmBAGMQJ:forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php%3Ff%3D39%26t%3D2961203+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Y_GjQmRSy5QJ:forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php%3Ff%3D39%26t%3D2961203%26p%3D14421383+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

Before the master password, I had tried resetting signon.importedFromSqlite and moving logins.json to re-import it from signons.sqlite. It never regenerated a new logins.json. I tried using a key3.db and logins.json from a few months old backup and couldn't see any saved logins (after re-creating signon.importedFromSqlite to true).

My final solution was to download 48.0.2 (64 bit), uninstall 49 (32 bit), and install 48.0.2 (64 bit). All my saved logins are available again when using the original profile (I had noticed that logins.json had all the info in it). I have been checking About Firefox to see if it will auto upgrade, but it keeps saying I have the newest version installed. I have not tried setting a master password yet in 48.0.2, in case that fixes the issue (I want to auto upgrade, see if the problem exists with 64 bit, and if it does, downgrade again and try setting a master password)

One possible thing I did in the past (maybe 6 months back) was setting the master password, and then I didn't like having it on, so I turned it off. In 48.0.2, it says master password is not set when I try to turn it on, asking to set the password.

It's a bit hard to follow the discussion so I just want to clarify something: Did have you a master password setup/active before upgrading to 49 the first time?

No, it was not active / not set when upgrading to 49. The only time I turned it on was 6 months ago or so, and I had turned it off/unset it very shortly after.

The reason I was trying to set it today was because of those threads, where people say resetting it helped their situation.

Remember that currently v49 is a beta, meaning there may be bugs. Are were right to post the problem here. I've called for more help.

In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.
