Can no longer post to the thread https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/963642?fpa=1

Some of the suggestions there looked good until I tried them, but all to no avail. In the Help -> Troubleshooting Information page I found (under the boldface header "Important Modified Preferences ") an entry "keyword.URL" which referred to ask.com. Rahter than try find out how to modify that setting I decided life's too short, and instead went back to the top right corner of the (Troubleshooting Info) page and hit the button for [Reset Firefox]. Problem solved.

That old thread from 2013 is about Firefox 21 and the keyword.URL pref is no longer supported since Firefox 23 (bug 738818). There are a few things that you can do in cases like that and that is checking for prefs that relate to the ask.com URL and reset those prefs and check your extensions and check for malware and check for other issues with prefs (user.js).
